MoNsTeR's vs aLiEnS

Monsters vs. Aliens
Honestly, I was not impressed by this movie. I even saw it in 3-D, and half way through the movie, you could tell they got tired of doing the 3-D animation. Yeah it was a good clean family film, but there was so much more that they could have done with the story. It was a boring story, with no real climax and it felt like it was just being dragged on and on and on. I didn’t hate the whole movie, but overall I didn’t love it either. I know that this is a children’s film, but so many of these dream works and pixar films these days try to market to more than just children.

First off, the cast was fabulous for this movie. Lots of big names and lots of good funny people in it. Reese Witherspoon was Susan/Ginormica (main character, monster tall) Seth Rogan (superbad, Knocked up, freaks and geeks) was B.O.B., Hugh Laurie (Dr. House on House MD) was a mad scientist cock roach, Will Arnett (Job on Arrested Development) was a half man half fish sea monster, Kiefer Sutherland (24, lost boys) was General Monger, Rainn Wilson (Dwight from the Office) was the Alien Warlod Gallaxhar, Stephen Colbert was the President of the United States, Paul Rudd (I Love You Man, Role Models) was Susan’s fiancé, Jeffery Tambor (Dad in Arrested Development) was Susan’s Father, Amy Poehler (SNL, Baby Mama) was the voice of the Alien super computer, Ed Helms (Andy from the Office) was the news reporter, and John Krasinski (Jim from the Office) played one of the commanders. As you can see it was a very full cast of brilliant comic genius who didn’t really get to shine to their full potential. The only who actually did well in this film, and really made it funny was Seth Rogan as B.O.B. He is just naturally funny, and has a really good laugh.

The plot of this Movie is Susan (Witherspoon) who was living her quite life in Modesto, California, gets hit by meteor on her wedding day that contains powerful matter in it. During her wedding vows she starts growing, and becomes monster tall, and the government raid her wedding, capture her, and call her a monster and put her in a monster prison. That’s where she meets the other monsters, like B.O.B. (Rogan), the missing link (Arnett), and Dr. Cockroach (Laurie). They will never get out of prison, until Gallaxhar (Wilson) finds out that the meteor that hit earth contains material that he needs to create a new world and decides to destroy earth as well, so the government sends the monsters to fight the battle.

The things I liked about the movie were that it was clean. I wouldn’t expect it to be dirty at all, but it was good clean humor. There weren’t any jokes that really only adults would get, or anything sexual at all. There are no bad words for kids to repeat over and over again. I like the fact that the movie is about a woman finding her own niche, her own beat in life. It is very pro feminism, which I think is a good thing to install into young women these days. Women need to know that they can do anything in life if they want to. Susan, the main character, finds out through trials and experience that she is her own person and that she is who she is, no matter what people or society tells her. People made fun of her and picked on her, but that didn’t get to her. It was a very good clear message. I also loved Seth Rogan in this film. He was awesome. He was very funny and clever. He made me laugh a lot in this film. Stephen Colbert did pretty good in this film. My favorite scene with him in it was when we approached the alien starship for the first time, and played the song from close encounters of the third kind and then did a break dancing battle to show that he came in peace. The 3-D animation was really cool at the begging, then after it a while it was old and was nothing special.

My problem with the movie was that it jumped into the plot way to fast for me. It just started, and left me with questions at the begging of the movie. I wonder how a little kid must have felt. I have to admit, seeing it in 3-D was pretty cool. I hadn’t seen a 3-D movie since Captain EO with Michael Jackson at Disney Land. But half way through the movie it felt that the animators got tired of trying to make it cool 3-D scenes, and it got less entertaining as the movie went on. I really felt the movie just dragged on for me. I had a hard time staying awake.

Now, this I am not saying that my 6-year-old Nephew and 4-year-old niece wouldn’t love this, in fact, they probably would want to see it multiple times in theatres. It’s got a good feel to it. Nothing negative, lots of bright colors, and things that kids would laugh at it. To a 6-year-old boy, a talking cockroach or a clever sea monster is hilarious. Aliens that have big heads and women that are as tall as buildings are pleasing to their eyes. The only way I would actually see this movie again is if my niece or nephew asked me to take them to the movie. I would get more joy from them laughing than anything else.
